One of the original watercolour paintings from Lucy's cottage garden.
Mixed in among the other flowers in the garden the Columbine fights for its space, its petals are delicate but the stems are strong and they hold the flowers up well. The colour of the flowers extends, darkening, into the stems. The shapes of the flowers are intricate and fascinating to study and paint.
These Columbine or Aquilegia grow everywhere in my cottage garden. They are loved by the bees. The shape of their petals is unusual and inspires many names. Two that I love are ‘Granny’s Bonnet and ‘Bee’s cap’, other people think the petals look like doves and the five petals resemble five doves nestling together.
The Columbine flower symbolises wisdom, peace and strength.
Framed with a white wood frame with inner edging of antique silver. The double mount is a strong blue reflecting the colour of the columbine flowers.
